Twin Sprung mattresses have been on the market for many, many years. They are a simple technique created to offer the 'best of both worlds' in terms of firmness and support from a spring unit.
A higher gauge wire, for softer support, will often be placed on a firmer, lower gauge wire to offer good support as well as comfort.
In the image below, you can see two rows of open coil springs on top of each other (seperated by a layer of fabric in most cases). The lower layer will comprise of a larger spring, usually quite firm. This will give a good supportive feel to the mattress. On top of this layer, you will see a smaller, softer layer of springs ideal for following the contours of your body and offering great comfort.
In the image, we have shown open coil springs, but it is possible for a twin spring unit to feature pocket springs.
It is also possible for a spring unit to comprise of three or even four layers of springs. Although this is very rare and often very expensive.
