Product Description

The Dura Beds Roma Deluxe Mattress is part of the Orthopaedic Backcare Collection, a range of mattresses offering a firmer feel at a great price. The Roma Deluxe mattress is made to a high standard and boasts an Open Coil spring system and deep layers of fillings. This mattress also has a reinforced sidewall frame to strengthen the mattress.

This is an unusual firm mattress, as it is a quilted, smooth-topped mattress, whereas most firm mattresses are tufted. The Roma Deluxe has a firm and supportive spring system at its core, and is topped off with fibre fillings, which are in a high density so to further add to the firm feel. The Open Coil spring unit used in this mattress boasts a 12.5 gauge wire, which is used to create all the springs, all linked by the same continuous wire. As weight is applied to the springs, it is spread out evenly and instantly to give good support.

The fillings used in this mattress are breathable fibre fillings. The high-density fibre pad means that the firmness is not compromised, but the fact they're breathable allows air to move freely through the mattress, keeping it cool and fresh at all times. This is a quilted mattress with a smooth and even surface, which has been finished off with a soft, stretch-knit fabric that feels silky-smooth and tactile.

This is a turnable mattress, so will need flipping over once per season, and will also need to be rotated (spun around) once per season, alternating between the two movements.

    Quick delivery
We ordered on a Friday and it was delivered the following Wednesday, the date we chose. We're very happy with this mattress which is being used by our Son. We worried a bit as he's still quite young, so did not want anything too soft or too firm, but this is perfect.

    Light but well made
I always judge a mattress on its weight, I dont know why, but I do. This is quite a light mattress compared to some of the other mattresses we've had over the years, but the quality and comfort is very good indeed for the price tag.

    Comfortable
This is a comfortable mattress and very good value for money. Its not like the bad quality ones we saw in the shops at the same price, so we know we've got a good deal.

Glossary

  • Coil Sprung

An Open Coil spring unit is made from a continuous piece of wire. This wire can be made from various different gauges of wire, resulting in differing firmnesses. The idea behind an Open Coil spring unit, or Continuous Springs as they are sometimes known, is that the spring unit can be made quickly, efficiently and therefore for little cost. Open Coil spring units tend to be the reserve of the entry level models on the market. However, some manufacturers have perfected the technique and the end result is extremely successful.

Open Coil spring units tend to be the reserve of the entry level models on the market. However, some manufacturers have perfected the technique and the end result is extremely successful.

A single piece of wire will be placed in a machine, bent into coils. Each coil will be joined at the top, the bottom or both and the result is a spring unit made of one wire. The reason this works well, is that the springs can support one another and share any weight or pressure across the surface. Other methods of spring units include Twin Sprung or Pocket Sprung.

  • Fillings

The fillings of each mattress can differ from one another, but largely they include British Lambs Wool and Cotton. Some also feature Latex, Silk and Cashmere.

  • Pillow Top

A pillow top mattress is a relatively new development in the bedding industry. Originally the technique applied to the more expensive mattresses, the technique has been perfected to such an extent that the prices have fallen the Pillow Top is much more widely available. Known as the Euro Top by American retailers, the design was originally on the wider market a few years ago, and is now a common site in bedrooms around the World. The idea is to separate the surface fillings from the core of the mattress itself. This results in more support and more comfort. Many traditional mattresses fasten the surface fillings to the spring unit in the mattress. A Pillow Top mattress has a distinct separate layer for the fillings and therefore reacts independently to the spring unit, resulting in less dipping and a solid feel. The technique also offers greater edge-to-edge support.

Pillow tops can take many forms nowadays. A deep layer on the surface which contains memory foam. Another technique of Pillow Top mattress is the Silentnight Treasure mattress. A shallower, quilt like style. All in all, this type of mattress is continuing to go from strength to strength and would appear to be here to stay.

  • Pocket Sprung

Pocket Sprung units are an adaption of the traditional open coil/continuous spring unit. By placing each spring in its own individual 'pocket' (a fabric sock-like pouch), the spring is not joined to any other part of the mattress. The pocket that supports the spring is then joined to its neighbouring pockets and this effect creates a unique feel.

By creating a spring unit in this way, it allows the springs to move independently, rather than sharing the pressure with surrounding springs. This effect allows for much more accurate contour following and a more comfortable feel overall.

If you were to push your hand into a traditionally sprung mattress, the area around your hand would dip/sink too. With Pocket Springs, this sunken area is much more remote and therefore more accurately follows the contours of the pressure source. There are differences in the techniques used to create Pocket Springs, but more or less they remain the same.

  • Turn / No Turn

Some mattresses require turning over, to aid even settlement. Others do not require turning, but will still require rotating.
