THIS ITEM IS NOW DISCONTINUED
The Highgrove Ortho Gold is a super value firm open coil spring divan set. It is covered in a strong damask fabric and uses a 12.5g Bonnel open coil spring unit to offer firm support. Filled with natural polyester fibre and featuring a Micro Quilted border and base, the Highgrove Ortho Gold is a comprehensively supportive mattress combining support with comfort for a good night's sleep. The mattress is Hand Tufted for extra comfort and support and is also reversible.
The Highgrove Ortho Gold Mattress has been manufactured with firmness and comfort in mind, consisting of a 12.5 gauge bonnell open coil spring unit which is supported with a 9 gauge full wire frame for ultimate support. The mattress is Hand Tufted with woollen rosettes embedded into numerous levels of quality natural polyester fibre fillings. The modern striped Belgian Damask cover, Flag Stitched handles and brass air vents complete this attractive mattress.
The Highgrove Ortho Gold mattress features a 12.5 gauge Bonnell Open Coil spring unit for comfort and support across the whole sleep surface. Open Coil springs are effectively made from one large wire and all the springs are joined together in a continual string. This traditional approach results in a supportive mattress that will stand the test of time.
The Highgrove Ortho Gold offers firm even support. It is Hand Tufted, a technique which links through the fillings of the mattress to pull it all together and create more tension. This creates an even spread of support across the entire sleep surface and provides a firmer feel to the mattress.

Glossary
- Fibre Most mattresses will have layers of fillings under the surface to increase comfort and separate the spring units from the surface. The most common fillings used in mattresses are cotton, wool and polyester among others. Mattresses require fillings to create a soft surface tension on which to sleep. The fillings normally compliment the internal spring unit by adding comfort to the support offered (by the spring unit) The tension of the surface fillings can be tuned by the density in which they are packed as well as by the method in which they are bound together. Tufting results in a slightly firmer feel than quilting.
- Flag Stitched
Flag Stitching is the method in which handles are sewn to the sides of mattresses.
Flag Stitching is a robust and durable method normally the reserve of more expensive mattresses (due to the extra time and skill required). - Open Coil
An Open Coil spring unit is made from a continuous piece of wire. This wire can be made from various different gauges of wire, ending in differing firmnesses. The idea behind an Open Coil spring unit, or Continuous Springs as they are sometimes known, is that the spring unit can be made quickly, efficiently and therefore for little cost. Open Coil spring units tend to be the reserve of the entry level models on the market. However, some manufacturers have perfected the technique and the end result is extremely successful.
A single piece of wire will be placed in a machine, bent into coils. Each coil will be joined at the top, the bottom or both and the result is a spring unit made of one wire. The reason this works well, is that the springs can support one another and share any weight or pressure across the surface. Other methods of spring units include Twin Sprung or Pocket Sprung. - Quilted / Micro Quilted
Quilting is the stitching technique used to join or attach the mattress' surface layers of fibres to the surface material (the ticking). There are various different techniques which can be used to join these layers, but Quilting is common. Traditionally, Quilting offers a softer surface feel than Tufting as the layers are not held together so tightly. Also see Diamond Stitching or Micro Quilting for variations on Quilting.
- Rotate
Some mattresses require rotating, meaning turning over completely. This can also be combined with rotating the mattress.
- Tufted
Tufting is a traditional and highly successful way of finishing a mattress surface. The end result makes the mattress appear to have dimples, or buttons dipping into the surface. This technique is designed to hold the surface materials together and to fix them to the core of the mattress to prevent the layers moving over time. A modern method is Spiral Tufting, which involves fixing the surface to the fillings and spring unit.
The actual tuft is usually made from a cotton felt material and is fastened by a cotton or wool chord to the spring unit, in most cases. A tufted mattress will normally have a firmer surface than a non-tufted/quilted surface. The reason for this is that the Tufting process actually holds the surface material and underlying fibre layers tightly together. This will create a tighter, firmer feel than a quilted mattress. - Turn / No Turn
Some mattresses require turning over, to aid even settlement. Others do not require turning, but will still require rotating.
