Product Description

The Dura Beds Pillow Top Sicily Mattress is the Sister mattress to the Pillow Top Turin mattress, the only difference being the firmness level, as a result of the tufts on this Sicily mattress. This mattress is very luxurious, packed full of natural fibre fillings and built around a supportive 2000 Pocket Spring unit. This mattress is very popular indeed, and offers superb value for money.

The Sicily mattress has been strengthened and tightened thanks to the tufting process. This results in a slightly firmer feel (than the Turin mattress). The 2000 Pocket Springs are supportive and relatively stiff, but when combined with the fibre fillings on top, the end result is a Medium firmness level for this mattress. Each of the 2000 springs will move up and down like pistons, moving as weight is applied to perfectly mirror the body's contours. This process prevents pressure points from forming overnight, which will, in turn, prevent aches and pains from developing, as well as promoting good posture and aiding blood flow.

The Sicily mattress has a deep, deep pad of comfortable fillings on top. This layer is applied by hand to ensure an even and consistent feel. These fillings are very comfortable indeed and work in harmony with the springs underneath. As these fillings are completely natural, they will allow air to move through the mattress freely, keeping it cool and comfortable at all times.

This is a no-turn mattress, only needing rotation (spinning around) once per season, although we recommend that this is done more often in the early weeks after delivery to ensure that settlement is even. There are handles for easy movement when required.

Dura beds have finished this mattress off with a very tactile stretch-knit fabric, which is also breathable. This fabric is silky-smooth and very comfortable, as well as being durable and hard-wearing. There are breather vents on the sides of this mattress to further aid moisture and heat management through the night.

Glossary

  • Breathability

Mattresses need to breathe. With the amount of fillings and areas of space within a mattress, they can quickly hold heat and moisture. Over time this can influence the way a mattress behaves and also effect the life span of a mattress.

Manufacturers have developed different ways of tackling the problem of Breathability in mattresses. Some brands have used vents to allow air to pass through the mattress. Some brands use state-of-the-art materials to cover the mattress, such as Coolmax or Outlast. Memory Foam has a reputation of storing heat and moisture, as foam requires heat to soften up.Memory Foam brands have overcome this problem by applying Coolmax and Outlast, they also use Open Cell technology. This technique is to simply allow the foam to settle with larger spaces between the foam cells. This allows heat and moisture to move freely without getting trapped.

Some mattresses are created in such a way that they do not require any additional Breathability methods. These mattresses are generally the entry level mattresses with Open Coil spring units and not a great deal of fillings.

  • Fillings

The fillings of each mattress can differ from one another, but largely they include British Lambs Wool and Cotton. Some also feature Latex, Silk and Cashmere.

  • Pillow Top

A pillow top mattress is a relatively new development in the bedding industry. Originally the technique applied to the more expensive mattresses, the technique has been perfected to such an extent that the prices have fallen the Pillow Top is much more widely available. Known as the Euro Top by American retailers, the design was originally on the wider market a few years ago, and is now a common site in bedrooms around the World. The idea is to separate the surface fillings from the core of the mattress itself. This results in more support and more comfort. Many traditional mattresses fasten the surface fillings to the spring unit in the mattress. A Pillow Top mattress has a distinct separate layer for the fillings and therefore reacts independently to the spring unit, resulting in less dipping and a solid feel. The technique also offers greater edge-to-edge support.

Pillow tops can take many forms nowadays. A deep layer on the surface which contains memory foam. Another technique of Pillow Top mattress is the Silentnight Treasure mattress. A shallower, quilt like style. All in all, this type of mattress is continuing to go from strength to strength and would appear to be here to stay.

  • Pocket Sprung

Pocket Sprung units are an adaption of the traditional open coil/continuous spring unit. By placing each spring in its own individual 'pocket' (a fabric sock-like pouch), the spring is not joined to any other part of the mattress. The pocket that supports the spring is then joined to its neighbouring pockets and this effect creates a unique feel.

By creating a spring unit in this way, it allows the springs to move independently, rather than sharing the pressure with surrounding springs. This effect allows for much more accurate contour following and a more comfortable feel overall.

If you were to push your hand into a traditionally sprung mattress, the area around your hand would dip/sink too. With Pocket Springs, this sunken area is much more remote and therefore more accurately follows the contours of the pressure source. There are differences in the techniques used to create Pocket Springs, but more or less they remain the same.

  • Tufted

Tufting is a traditional and highly successful way of finishing a mattress surface. The end result makes the mattress appear to have dimples, or buttons dipping into the surface. This technique is designed to hold the surface materials together and to fix them to the core of the mattress to prevent the layers moving over time. A modern method is Spiral Tufting, which involves fixing the surface to the fillings and spring unit.

The actual tuft is usually made from a cotton felt material and is fastened by a cotton or wool chord to the spring unit, in most cases. A tufted mattress will normally have a firmer surface than a non-tufted/quilted surface. The reason for this is that the Tufting process actually holds the surface material and underlying fibre layers tightly together. This will create a tighter, firmer feel than a quilted mattress.

  • Tufts

This is the dimple like way of binding the various layers of the mattress together. A cord is fasted from the bottom of the mattress to the top, and held tightly in place.

  • Turn / No Turn

Some mattresses require turning over, to aid even settlement. Others do not require turning, but will still require rotating.
