Product Description
Have you ever wondered which is the firmest Sealy mattress? It's the Sealy Mellbreak mattress, part of the Ortho Plus Collection, a range of beds designed to be firm and supportive. The Mellbreak is the firmest of the three mattresses in this range and is made especially for those who want a very firm mattress! This Sealy mattress has the PostureTech Spring system and the additional lumbar region support provided by the PowerPack system.
The Mellbreak is certainly a firm mattress, boasting firm springs and fillings, all working together to produce the firmest mattress in Sealy's range. The springs inside this mattress are the famous PostureTech springs that are made in-house by Sealy themselves and are the result of years of working alongside health and medical professionals. This spring system sees bodyweight energy spread across a mesh of springs, instantly and efficiently. Sealy has also fitted their EdgeGuard technology to the side of the mattress, resulting in strong sidewalls.
Sealy has developed the PowerPack system, which specifically aids the support for the lumbar region. This is particularly important in the prevention of lower back pain, caused by pressure points from forming. If the lower back does not have the support it needs, bodyweight can be focussed into this area during the night and aches and pains can form, much in the same way feet can ache if you've had a long day standing up!
This is a fibre filled mattress, no foam or gel, only breathable fibre fillings that allow the mattress to maintain a cool and comfortable temperature throughout the night. This Sealy mattress has also been tufted - hence the dimple like features on the sleeping surface - which is done to ensure a consistent firmness level across the mattress as well as ensuring the fillings do not move around over time.
This is a turnable mattress and will require both turning and rotating once per season, alternating between the two. We would strongly suggest doing this more often in the first few weeks after delivery to ensure even settlement.

Glossary
- Fibre Most mattresses will have layers of fillings under the surface to increase comfort and separate the spring units from the surface. The most common fillings used in mattresses are cotton, wool and polyester among others. Mattresses require fillings to create a soft surface tension on which to sleep. The fillings normally compliment the internal spring unit by adding comfort to the support offered (by the spring unit) The tension of the surface fillings can be tuned by the density in which they are packed as well as by the method in which they are bound together. Tufting results in a slightly firmer feel than quilting.
- Firmness
MyNextMattress is developing a new and unique solution to the Firmness scale accuracy. Not seen anywhere else in the World, we will be measuring the Firmness of all our mattresses precisely and in detail.
We are the only company in the Country that will actually measure the Firmness of a mattress and give a grading out of 10. We are always aware that choosing your next mattress can be a difficult and time consuming process, therefore we strive to give as much information as possible on every mattress we sell.
The way our system works is by applying weight to a mattress. We will apply weight gradually and measure the amount the mattress dips. The more weight, the more the mattress will 'sink'. We would then measure the distance the mattress dips and plot these measurements (weight and distance) on a graph. This graph can then be used to tell us the Firmness category the mattress fits into, 7 out of 10 for instance.
Our Firmness Device provides a central rod which we apply weights to, on the bottom end there is a disc which pushes into the mattress. The top of this rod supports the weights and will sink according to the 'give' in a mattress. We measure from this point.
As a result of this unique technique, it will be possible for you to shop by the firmness of a mattress, this is not possible anywhere else. - Orthopaedic
Orthopaedic mattresses are usually the firmest mattresses on the market. A common mistake made by those with back pain, is to assume that a firm Orthopaedic mattress will be the solution. Personal comfort and a correct diagnosis of the cause of the pain should always be saught before purchasing an Orthopaedic mattress.
Many brands have 'Ortho' mattresses. Terms used include 'Backcare' or 'Orthocare' and the theme is generally to produce a firmer feeling mattress. The idea is to create a mattress that the body can rest on without sinking in and bending the spine, causing pressure to build up. However, if a lighter person lays on a firmer mattress, they will find the spine will not align correctly as the loaded parts of the body (shoulders, hips etc) are not sitting correctly. For more information on the causes of back pain, click here or read about another solution in the Zoning description. - Pressure Points
Pressure Points are created in the body when lying on a mattress which is not suitable for a persons physique. The Pressure Points are caused by putting stresses through the body. When the spine is not aligned correctly (i.e, straight), it can cause pressure to build up in the back, hips or shoulders (etc).
When a bed is too soft, the body sinks in, causing certain areas to be under the strain of the rest of the body. When a mattress is too hard/firm, then the weight applied can cause the body to flex/bend in the opposite way - causing a similar problem. Hips, shoulders and so on, are requried to be sunken into the mattress slightly more than the surrounding areas, as they carry the weight. When this is not the case, the lower back may be bent to compensate. The ideal mattress is one which will keep the spine straight.
