Dating back to 1899, an English engineer named James Marshall was working in Canada when his wife suddenly became ill.
To help his wife, he created and built an innovative support system which integrated coiled springs wrapped in materials, one being horsehair. At this time, the coils were very popular in chair seats, but they were not used or utilised in mattresses to offer additional comfort and support for individuals. Having unintentionally created the pocket spring, it then went on to cement it’s place in history as the Marshal coil.
Fast forward to two years later and a few Marshall Mattress agents promoted the innovative pocket spring mattress across Britain. Although their efforts were lost as local manufacturers failed to see the potential in the mattresses, they persevered and fortunately began producing the mattresses themselves. They first launched under the name The Marshall Sanitary Mattress Company, but in 1911 rebranded itself as what we know today, Vispring. Gaining incredible growth, and best known for pioneering the incredible pocket sprung mattress, Vispring mattresses could be found on the famous Titanic, as well as the Queen Mary ocean liner! The bespoke comfort of the mattresses were a perfect fit for cabins and suites of the world’s finest ships.
With revolutionary designs came achievements like no other, and by the 1920s Vispring started to use other luxurious natural materials such as pure cotton, Shetland wool, silk, and cashmere which only improved the range of mattresses produced. In 1932, Vispring created another innovation – the Vibase. It was the first pocket sprung divan, and the prestigious bed brand did not disappoint. In 1969, they moved operations over to Plymouth where all of the handmade magic happens. And in 2012, they received an incredible honour of being awarded the Queen’s Award for Enterprise.
